INNOVATION - EDUCATION - TRADITION

Innovation in vascular surgery goes beyond the fast evolving device and related technologies developed to take on new and more complex challenges in the era of endovascular interventions. A need to redefine the education and training needs for both the training and the practicing vascular surgeon becomes as crucial as the devices that we employ for the treatment of vascular surgery.

The principles on which we base the practice of vascular surgery in the modern era originates from the initial work of the pioneer innovators; those that had little instrumentation beyond clinical and surgical skills to develop the practice of vascular surgery as a discipline in its own right. This proud tradition of acknowledging and celebrating our innovators and educators, in both the modern era and the past, continues in Vascular 2008.

The invited faculty of vascular2008 who are detailed on this website represent some of the most innovative thinkers and surgeons in the modern era of vascular and endovascular surgery. We have focused the programming of the scientific sessions to target the key areas of controversy where easier and innovative interventions challenge our traditional indications for treatment.

The Great Debates session on the first day of the meeting pits the best minds in the international scene to some of these controversies. The innovations in endovascular treatments with new device technologies used across the range of vascular disease is reviewed (and in some cases, previewed) in a plenary dedicated to Endovascular Innovations in Vascular Surgery. A re-focus on below the knee interventions is key to the Diabetic Foot Symposium which brings together the different disciplines involved in the management of this complex area. In the area of Training, audit and credentialing we interrogate the future drawing on the global experience provided by a faculty representing 4 continents of experience. The Justin Miller Oration completes this investigation with a look at Vascular training beyond 2008. A plenary dedicated to Venous Thrombo-embolism and Current Scientific Research in Vascular Surgery complement the clinical plenaries on Thoracic aorta, AAA, PVD,Venous Disease and Dialysis Access. The scientific convenor has focused programming on new developments in these areas.

All of this will complement a Vascular Ultrasound and Nursing Programme, which will integrate into the main scientific plenaries in a 4 day programme format.

We are thrilled to have a significant contribution of the Vascular Society of Malaysia who bring with them unique perspectives to problems common to vascular surgeons across the globe.

The social programme which kicks off with a funky Trade Unplugged interaction with our sponsors and culminates in a unique rail carriage ride to the fascinating National Rail Museum for the Conference Dinner Vascular2008: Riding a proud tradition on the Saturday night showcases Adelaide’s ability to turn on a show.

We look forward to welcoming you to Adelaide for Vascular 2008.
